Official photographic portrait of Admiral Gustave Besnard (1895)

Summary[edit]

Description
English: A three-quarter length official photographic portrait of Gustave Besnard in 1895, when Besnard serves as Ministre de la Marine, the French equivalent of First Lord of the Admiralty.

Besnard, in admiral’s full dress uniform, holds a pair of gloves in his right hand. The broad red ribbon on his chest is the decoration of Grand Officier de la Légion d’Honneur.

In his position of Ministre de la Marine between 1895 and 1898, Besnard was responsible for the overall strategic direction of the French Navy. He directed naval support for the conquest of Madagascar (1895). He secured from Parliament the necessary credits to keep the fleets of the French Navy at operational strength and at immediate readiness. He won Parliament approval for setting up overseas Navy bases and strongpoints in many parts of the world: in particular the arsenal of Bizerte (Tunisia).
Français : Photo officielle de Gustave Besnard en 1895. Il est alors Vice-amiral (le plus haut grade de la hiérarchie « Marine » de l’époque) et Ministre de la Marine.
