Karolina

Karolina hails from the darkest, deepest regions of the Ukraine, now residing in sunny Bournemouth. She still holds on to the twang of her mother tongue, rolling her R's and swapping her V's for W's. She is a beautiful girl, naturally so, but it hadn't quite dawned upon her yet. She holds herself somewhat like the spotty young tomboy you knew from school, not quite comfortable in her own skin yet inoffensively attractive. She is small and diminutive, with big eyes and radiant hair. And although she appears to not believe her reflection, she goes about her day with a relaxed confidence that almost certainly does not care what anyone else should think. Nor should she.

We laughed, we talked, we took photos...in that order. There was an instant feeling of relaxation and we often found ourselves laying down camera to instead talk. But we were productive, each on the very same page of what needed to be captured. I did so whilst she was talking, whilst she was thinking, daydreaming. I moved around her in silence, listening to her talk about her life, her loves, her memories, whilst I gently clicked away another frame, and another. I didn't want to get in the way, I didn't want to stop her talking, I simply wanted to document who she was. And I think I did, in some way, capture a little of who she is. Trapped in a foreign land so dissimilar to the one that six years ago she departed. Still unsure of where she belongs, still unsure of who she is. But what she is for certain is genuine, a talker of truths who would in no way simply tell you what you wanted to hear. She is an honest person, with a foxy side to her personality that you can see in her smile is waiting for its time to appear.

There was a real warmth to her, one that I cannot fully describe. Im not sure how I picked up on this, maybe it was the flame in her hair, the softness of her voice. But somehow, there was a warmth. So I have tried to take the images with that in mind, boosting the warm colours so that the images are inviting and intimate, as I think these are words I would use to describe Karolina. She has this welcoming glow to her, almost a summer meadow feel to her. Im not quite sure what I am trying to say, but I hope you see it in the images. Ive taken them from unusual angles, to give you a feel for how it feels to be close to her, looking over her shoulder. A lot of the images are from behind, looking almost past her. Somehow, I feel this shows her honestly.
