Summary[edit]

Description
English: This arresting image clearly shows the outline and parts of the British airship. Britain's airships were only partly rigid, at the front and the back, unlike Germany's completely rigid Zeppelin. Both sides used the ships for air and naval reconnaissance but Britain never attempted to use hers for long range bombing.

[Original reads: 'OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPH TAKEN ON THE BRITISH WESTERN FRONT IN FRANCE. R.F.A. kite balloons are the eyes of our guns in France. The Observers are highly trained men & when their balloons are shelled or attacked by enemy aircraft they are forced to make rapid descents in parachutes. These parachutes must be kept in perfect working order. Observation Balloon ascending.']
