Our flight was at 6 am. I knew we’d have problems getting to the airport. We’d asked the hotel to book us a taxi. To hotel staff in Bali, tourists are little more than walking wallets and they’ll find any way to make money from you. We made it clear to them that we wanted a metered taxi, not a private car, knowing that it would be much more expensive going privately. We told them this repeatedly. They confirmed they’d ordered a metered taxi. We knew they were lying since they get commision for referring us to private cars. As we dragged our tired bodies to the hotel lobby the fella in reception said a private car was waiting for us. I held my temper and told him the price we were willing to pay. This was 30% less than the private car. Some telephone calls were made and the driver decided to make his way to the hotel to sort the situation out. He hadn’t realised that I’m not a morning person. I don’t respond well to 3:00am, especially without coffee. When he walked into the office he started jabbering on. I told him to be quiet and listen. I told him the price that I was going to pay, that I was in no mood to negotiate, and that I couldn’t give a rats arse if he didn’t like it. 3 weeks of hearing the hard sell, lying, manipulation, theft (my jacket was stolen this time), had taken its toll, and I was not in the mood to negotiate.
