English: Note on distinguishing ij from i j in de Vries & te Winkel, De grondbeginselen der Nederlandsche spelling, 1865.

De Redactie meende in het Woordenboek die onregelmatigheid te moeten vermiden en te dien einde het letterteeken voor ij of IJ in zooverre te wizigen, dat het onderscheid tusschen i j en den hier bedoelden klank duidelijk bleek. Het natuurlijkste middel daartoe ware geweest, de beide deelen aan elkander tot eene eenheid te verbinden, gelijk men in het schrijven gewoon is te doen. Doch de zwarigheden van typographischen aard, die zich hierbij voordeden, de vreemde en onbehaaglijke lettervormen, die ons voorgeled werden, en die vooral bij het kapitale letterteeken aanstootelijk waren, hebben ons genoodzaakt van ons goede voornemen af te zien en den gewonen vorm van ij en IJ ones ondanks te behouden.
