The three-quarter length portrait of a young lad of some tenor twelve years of age, standing by a grassy bank surmounted by a tree, upon which he is leaning his right arm, his whole f). . body being slightly inclined in that direction, He wears a loose /yf\ rSo. /- *f ^^Vv_ jacket of dark blue cloth, unbuttoned and worn open to show his soft white shirt, with a narrow collar of lace round the neck. The trousers are of the same material as the coat. His left arm hangs in front of the body, the hand holding a cap round which is a band of gold braid. Height, 35 inches; width, 28 inches. Francis Cotes was a contemporary and rival of Sir Joshua Reynolds.He was an eminent artist in crayons, was one of the first members ofthe Royal Academy, and also a member of the incorporated Society ofArtists.
