DEGE, JAMES HENRY—Born in Philadelphia. Pa., July 27, 1868; Son of John Henry and Laura Alice
Dege. Brought up and educated in public and nicht schools, Atlanta, Ga., his parents having moved
there during his infancy. Entered business career as a cash boy in a department store in Atlanta.
At the age of 16 was promoted to department manager, same store. At the age of 20 left Southern
home for Tacoma arriving here September 30, 1888. Beginning at the bottom, today Is president of
Dege & Milner, clothiers, Tacoma. Wash., the largest institution of its kind in the Pacific North-
west. He is one of the best known men in the State. August 10, 1898, was commissioned Captain
of Company " E." First Regiment National Guard of Washington, by Governor John R. Rogers. Mem-
ber Commercial Club and Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, Country and Golf Club, Ivanhoe Com-
mandery. Knights Templar: Afifi Temple, Mystic shrine, Tacoma Consistory No. 3; 32nd Degree
Mason, Lebanon Lodge F. & A. M.; Tacoma Lodge No. 174, B. P. O. E..
