The North School at Third and Pine operated in 1873-1883, and initially closed when the large 1883 Central School opened. A private kindergarten operated there for some time, and was also replaced by a fire station, which briefly housed some classes for a couple of years after the Central School burned April 10, 1888. After that, in 1890, Fire Station No. 2 was built on this site; that was eventually torn down to build the Bon Marché flagship store (1929), which eventually became a Macy's (scheduled to close in 2020; Amazon.com is expected to use that latter building for offices).
