hdeep shade; the brown alligator is in color much like the mudbanks on which he lies; and all the brilliantly colored animalsare in harmony with the intense lights and the bright hues oftropical plants. This resemblance to their surroundings aidsthem in hiding, whether from their own enemies, or from thecreatures which they are seeking for food. Plants and Animals in the Temperate Part of NorthAmerica. — Between the frigid and torrid zones, and botheast and west of the arid region, is an area of moderaterainfall and temperature where the vegetation and animalsdiffer from those of the other sections. Beginning in thewarm South and passing northward, we find that bothanimals and plants grow less numerous and less varieduntil, near the Arctic zone, they become scarce and few inkind. The pines and oaks of the United States give placeto the spruce, balsam fir, and maple in Canada ; thenthese gradually become stunted and disappear (Fig. 74),and beyond this the barrens are reached (p. 78).

They are carefullyprotected by state laws, which prohibit shooting except atcertain seasons, and then only in small numbers. WhenAmerica was first visited by Europeans, these woodsabounded in deer, moose, caribou, wolves, and foxes (Fig.75). Beavers built dams across the streams, the minkand otter fished in the waters, and bears roamed at will.
