PH Coll 328.270 The 45-ton fishing vessel emph render="italic" Gjøa /emph , captained by Roald Amundsen with a crew of six men, was the first vessel to transit the Northwest Passage. They left the Oslofjord in Norway on June 16, 1903, spent a total of 18 months ice-bound, and arrived in Nome on August 31, 1906 to a hero's welcome.
