Schematic illustration of the distribution of nitrous oxide (N2O) sources in the study area of Davidson and Swank (1986) and Davidson et al. (1986).

Summary[edit]

Description
English: Both nitrification and denitrification occurred in the soils at the study area but nitrification was most important in well-drained areas upslope and denitrification was most important in poorly drained areas near the stream. Concentrations of nitrate measured in the stream and in soil water collected from a lysimeter are shown. Variation in nitrate concentrations is consistent with nitrate removal by denitrification as subsurface water (groundwater and soil water) flows toward the stream. This figure is based on figure 5 of Davidson and Swank (1986).
