Description
English: This painting (oil on wood) from the last third of the 17th century alludes to the popular proverb "Nimm dich selbst bei der Nase" ("take yourself by your nose"). It's also called "Vogel Selbsterkenntnis" (Bird of self-knowledge) and exists in several samples (three, at least, in that same museum).

Inscription:

Zieeh sich ein yeydts selbst bey Der nasn --
Waß Dich nit Prendt Thue auch nicht Plasn.

Hochdeutsch: "Ziehe jedermann [ein yedts ist sächlich und bedeutet beide/alle drei Geschlechter] sich selbst an der Nase[n]

Was Dich nicht brennt [sollst] Du auch nicht blasen [=: 'das Brennen durch Beblasen verringern wollen'; wörtlich: "tue [es] auch nicht blasen"]."
