| Description |
English: The Nihon-ji Daibutsu is a 31-meter-high statue at Nihon-ji[1] on Mt. Nokogiri[2] in Kyonan Town[3], Chiba Prefecture. It depicts the healing Buddha, Yakushi Nyorai, also known as 'Bhaisajyaguru' in Sanskrit. It was carved from Bozuishi, a tuffaceous sandstone quarried only from Mt. Nokogiri, where the Nihon-ji is built. The original 37.7-meter-high statue was created by Ōno Jingorō Eirei in 1783 and was the largest stone-carved Buddha statue in pre-modern Japan. It was devastated by erosion and earthquakes and was restored in 1966.[4][5]
