Description Het stadhuis stamt uit de 17e eeuw, toen Nieuwpoort onderdeel werd van de Oude Hollandse Waterlinie. Het stadhuis is bovenop een inundatiesluis gebouwd, waarmee de omliggende gebieden onder water konden worden gezet. Dit was een bewuste keuze om te voorkomen dat de sluis bereikt kon worden door bv kwade boeren, die wilden voorkomen dat hun land onder water werd gezet.
