Summary

Description

Église Saint-Corneille de Nicorps, Manche, France

English: End of 14th-century east window. The four main panels depict Saint Cornelius (upper left, displayed with the papal tiara), Madonna and child (upper right, sitting on a throne with two angels at their sides), Saint Stephen (lower left, with palm and two stones on his head), and Saint John (lower right, holding a book). The heads of the two lancets display unidentified arms along with croziers. In the top we have five circular lights with the Holy Trinity in its centre, surrounded by the four Evangelist symbols. (See Palissy record IM50002429 and Martine Callias Bey and Véronique David, Les vitraux de Basse-Normandie, pp. 149–150. Note that both agree on the right panels. Bey and David assume the lower left panel to depict Saint Sebastian but the Palissy record appears more convincing due to the palm and the stones. Bey and David describe the upper left panel as an unidentified archbishop – again the Palissy record appears to be right as Cornelius is the patron of the church and displayed with the papal tiara.)
