  • Dansk: -Bente Skovgaard 1978: "Forarbejde til det noget anderledes maleri, udstillet på Salonen 1794, der fra svensk privateje i 1948 kom til Nationalmuseum, Stockholm. I Blichers oversættelse II 1808 p.86 hedder det:"Culmins Moder er tilbage i Borgen; hun seer ud til den blaarullende Strutha. En Hvirvelvind opstaar paa Floden, mørktsnoende sig om hendes Søns Aand. Hans Hunde tude paa deres Sted: hans Skjold er blodigt i Borgen.-"Est du falden min haarfangre Søn, i Erins skrækkelige Krige?" - Abildgaard har alle ting med, hundene, skjoldet; borgen angives ved en skjoldbehængt væg og de regelmæssige bænke, floden ruller "mørktsnoende" genfærdet frem, bevægelsen skildres ved sønnens skridt. At maleriet har en anden fremstilling af den døde (B.S. pl.27), en død nøgen yngling liggende på tårebanker, skyldes sikkert den smukke beskrivelse i den næste vers af Temoradigtet. Fillan, som dræbte ham i kampen, står ved floden og ser ned på den faldne unge døde, som sammenlignes med de dårdyr han selv som jæger skød. Der er mere tragedie og uhygge i maleriet, men sus af heltedrama i tegningen."
