Summary[edit]

Description Built between 1989 and 1992, this massive shopping mall, the largest in the United States, was designed by HGA, KKE Architects, Inc., and Jerde Partnership for Triple Five Group and DLR Group. The largest enclosed indoor shopping center in the world when it opened, the mall was eclipsed in the early 21st Century by larger and newer malls in Asia. The mall is located in Bloomington, Minnesota, a suburb of Minneapolis, and has a floor area of 5,600,000 square feet (520,000 square meters), split over four floors. The building is laid out in a square with department stores at the corners, jutting out at 45-degree angles from the rest of the building, with a ring of three and four-level shopping concourses surrounding a large central atrium, which houses the mall’s amusement park. The mall stands on the former site of Metropolitan Stadium, built in 1956 and closed in 1981, and was demolished in 1985, which was the former home of the Minnesota Vikings and Minnesota Twins. Between 2013 and 2015, the north end of the mall was extended to create a new entrance that bridges over Lindau Lane, adding additional retail space, an office building, and a JW Marriott Hotel to the mall. In addition to the JW Marriott, the mall features a Radisson Blu Hotel on the south side, and large parking structures to the east and west. The mall today is a major regional draw, as well as a bit of a tourist attraction, offering a massive number of retail shops, as well as an amusement park, aquarium, hotel, restaurants, and a casino.
