A. de Safonoff (XIX), Portrait de Nicolas II, importante huile sur toile, signée et datée 1898, 270x165 cm Provenance: Comte Boutourline Cette oeuvre aux dimensions spectaculaires représente le Tsar Nicolas II, empereur de Russie de 1894 à 1917, posant de manière solennelle en pied dans la salle du trône. Ce portrait est basé sur le Portrait de Nicolas II du fameux peintre russe Ilya Repin (1844-1930). Réalisé deux ans avant la version peinte par Safonoff, soit en 1896 l’année même du couronnement du Tsar, le tableau de Repin se trouve dans les collections du State Russian Museum de St. Petersburg. Mis à part une légère différence de dimensions, 251x160 cm pour celui de Repin contre 270x165 cm pour celui de Safonoff, quelques éléments distinguent les deux compositions. Safonoff représente le Tsar les mains séparées, l'une tenant la casquette l'autre l'attache de l'épée, alors que ses mains sont jointes chez Repin. La position des mains choisie par Safonoff se retrouve cependant dans un autre portrait du Tsar posant cette fois dans son intérieur et également peint par Repin en 1895. Safonoff réduit aussi le corps du lustre à 3 parties, au lieu des 5 que comporte celui de la version originale. A. de Safonoff reçut vraisemblablement l'accord du Tsar, ainsi que du peintre Ilya Repin, pour réaliser cette impressionnante toile dédiée à la décoration d'un palais. Le Tsar au regard vif et pénétrant est empreint ici d’une gravité réaliste et majestueuse. Il se présente au spectateur dans toute sa grandeur, telle que l'Empereur le souhaitait... |
