Summary[edit]

Description
English: Newcastle United F.C. vs Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C. in the 2011–12 Premier League at St James' Park. This is a scene from the Gallowgate End a few minutes after kick-off on the occasion of an increasingly rare traditional Saturday 3pm fixture. Newcastle are attacking the goal in the distance, the Leezes End, where the Wolves keeper is seen about to take a goal kick from. The East Stand on the right is the smallest in the stadium - most of the 52,287 spectators are out of view in this shot, being mostly in the much larger west (Milburn) stand out of shot to the left, or in the upper levels of the Leazes End, obscured by the Gallowgate End roof. The game ended in a 2-2 draw, after goals from Papiss Cisse on 6' and Jonas Gutierrez on 18' for Newcastle were cancelled out in the second half by Matt Jarvis on 50' and then Kevin Doyle on 66' for Wolves. Judging by the image timestamp of 15.09 and if the game clock at the corner of the pitch in the upper left is reading 10.44 (too blurred to be sure), Newcastle were already 1-0 up by this point. Despite the failure to secure the win in this game, for Newcastle this was a relatively good season under manager Alan Pardew, who can be seen at the edge of the technical area infront of the west stand. With this result keeping them in 6th, they went on to finish 5th, qualifying for the Europa League, having never been lower than 7th all season. Wolves by contrast were in turmoil; having sacked Mick McCarthy as their manager on 13 February, this was the first game in charge for new boss Terry Connor. With the club in the relegation zone at 3rd bottom on 21 points, but just 2 ahead of the bottom club, Connor failed in his mission to avoid the drop, this game being just one of 4 draws in an otherwise losing run which saw them finish rock bottom on 25 points, 6 points adrift of 2nd bottom, and 13 points from safety.
