| Description |
English: The New Yam Festival, also known as Iri Ji in the Igbo language, is a harvest festival that celebrates the beginning of the new yam season. It's observed in many parts of West Africa, but it's especially important in the Igbo culture of southeastern Nigeria. The festival is typically celebrated in August, and it involves a variety of rituals and ceremonies that celebrate the harvest and honor the yam as a symbol of life, fertility, and abundance. During the festival, the yams are cooked and shared among family and friends, and there are also traditional dances and songs performed.
