Text[edit]
New York Items. New York, June 19, 1866.
- The trial of Gonzales Fernandez, for the murder of Otero, was concluded yesterday. He was found guilty of murder in the first degree and remanded for sentence. The prisoner has all through the trial preserved an unmoved and manly appearance. On this, the last day of the trial, he looked haggard and anxious, but betrayed no sign of weakness or fear. During his summing up the counsel for the prosecution, now and then, turned and faced him, and on these occasions, he seemed rather anxious and turned his eyes in another direction. When the jury retired he went, attended by the officer, to the corner of the Court room close by the open window, and seemed to enjoy the fresh air. He said a few words to the officer and smiled. He understands just a few words of English. So soon as the verdict was declared it was translated to him, and then his dark complexion grew a shade paler, but it was only a moment, and he quickly regained his ordinary demeanor.
- Charles and Lewis Lindauer were arrested in this city yesterday and sent to Newark, New Jersey, for examination on the charge of having been concerned in the robbery on the 9th of last month of $9,000 worth of jewelry from the establishment of Baldwin, in the latter place.
- F. W. Foster formerly Superintendent of the United States Sanitary Commission, at Wilmington, North Carolina, and whose address is Box 110, Wilmington Post Office, North Carolina, publishes in the city papers a list of the paroled prisoners and discharged soldiers who were lost in the steamship General Lyon on the 28th of March.
