Description

View of New Orleans, taken from the Lower Cotton Press. 1850

The "Lower Cotton Press" or "Levee Steam Cotton Press" was a large industrial structure which used steam power to compress cotton bales for shipping. It was located at the foot of Press Street (the origin of the street's name) at the lower end of the Faubourg Marigny neighborhood. The view is looking upriver.
