"The portrait of Washington Irving has been so often painted, and so eagerly sought after, that our readers have probably seen more than one engraved copy claiming to be a likeness of the illustrious original. How great may be the resemblance to his features in some of them is not for us to say; but, appealing to our townsmen who are familiar with the features of one so generally beloved, we may venture to assure those who have had no opportunity of judging for themselves, that no likeness of Mr. Irving has ever been presented to the publick so true and life-like as that which we lay before them with the present number of the Mirror." | ||
