English: Nettle (Urtica dioica), Hamptworth The nettle is probably one of the most underestimated herbs. It is an invaluable plant which has been a source of food, medicine, fibre and dyes since the Bronze Age. Among its known constituents are iron, calcium, potassium and other trace elements, Vitamins A and C, and histamine. It has a wide application for treating internal and external bleeding and many skin complaints, including eczema. It can lower blood sugar level and is used in the treatment of rheumatism.
In the past it was a vital spring green vegetable, helping to purify blood and clear up vitamin deficiency ailments caused by poor winter diet, while nettle tea and nettle beer were favourite spring beverages. It is richer in iron and vitamins than spinach. The plants contain natural sugar, starch and protein. The mature plants were once used an an important fibre in cloth making. It was an alternative to cotton and in some cases considered superior to flax. Nettle have also been employed in the manufacture of paper, of commercial chlorophyll, and as a dye. Cut and dried nettle is fed to poultry, goats and cattle; and the caterpillars of many butterflies - comma, small tortoiseshell, red admiral, peacock and painted lady - feed on the leaves. |
