| Description |
Voyager 2's view of Neptune and Triton at around 1815 UT on August 25. This simulated view combines a wide-angle camera observation of Neptune and a narrow-angle camera observation of Triton taken within half an hour of one another. I then aligned these images using Neptune Viewer to determine the relative positions of the two bodies. The position of Voyager 2 with regards to the Neptune system causes a couple of interesting observing effects. First, the crescents are misaligned - the horns of Triton's crescent point in a slightly different direction than Neptune's, due to their positions relative to the Sun from Voyager 2's viewpoint. Additionally, Triton appears about twice as large relative to Neptune than it actually is. This is because Neptune was ~30% further away from Voyager when this image set was taken.
