Miss Cornish Dies at 78. Former Director Of Music School Succumbs Suddenly. Miss Nellie Cornish, 78, who director of the Pittsfield Common Music School from 1944 to Miss Nellie Cornish 1945 died suddenly April 24, 1954 at Richmond Beach, Washington. Miss Cornish was convalescing at the home friend after a month's illness in the Virginia Mason Hospital, Seattle. Miss Cornish studied music at the University of Washington and began teaching music after the turn of the century. In 1914 she opened a music studio in a portable structure in the Broadway district, Seattle. That was the beginning of the Cornish School of Allied Arts, which became internationally famous as a cultural center under her direction. The present building in Seattle was erected in 1921. Many Cornish graduates became national figures the fine arts world, taking their places in other schools and on stages of both Europe and ... . Miss Cornish resigned as director of the Seattle School in 1939 and moved to California. In 1940 she went to New York City where supervised a radio program until she came to Pittsfield in 1944 become the director of the Pittsfield Community Music School. She recently completed her autobiography, "The "Story of Miss Aunt Nellie." While writing it and doing some painting, she lived in New York and California, and returned to Seattle about a year ago.
