Description

Nombre Científico: Nautilus pompilius Nombre vulgar: Nautilus o Nautilo Ejemplar de la exposición "Fabricantes de perlas" del Aquarium Finisterrae: <a href="http://www.casaciencias.org/aquarium/fabricantes-de-perlas.html">www.casaciencias.org/aquarium/fabricantes-de-perlas.html</a>

Biología: Son moluscos aunque no bivalvos. Son cefalopodos arcaicos de los que quedan solo dos géneros. Tienen un sofisticado sistema de flotación gracias a los compartimentos de su concha externa que les permite regular su posición en la columna de agua como si de un chaleco hidrostático se tratase. El aire que acumula en su interior también le permite desplazarse en sentido horizontal si lo expulsa a través de su sifón. Tienen un desarrollado sentido del olfato y tacto gracias a sus “ 90 finos tentáculos”. De sus conchas también se extraen perlas. Alimentación: Se alimentan de presas como pequeños peces y crustáceos. Distribución: Se encuentra en toda la región indo-pacifico desplazándose muy tranquilamente en la columna de agua buscando alimento. También se han descrito ejemplares en otros mares.
