MT REDPOLL. (Acanthis linaria).About Life-size C0PVNI6HT )«03, Qv A. w uLurotO FINCHES, SPARROWS, ETC. 311 REDPOLL The Redpoll might properly be called the Americanlinnet. In general habits and appearance these birds resem-ble little sparrows, but they have the distinctive undulatingflight possessed by the goldfinch, and a little call note whichaccompanies each downward swoop. Like the Bohemianwaxwings and American crossbill, their summer home is inthe fur countries, but occasionally they have been known toappear in the northern portions of New England. Duringsevere winters they may be observed about the Great Lakesregion of Ilhnois and Indiana, about the same time we lookfor the hardy pine grosbeak or jolly snowflake and thewary raven. Their appearance in the Central States isunquestionably due to the scarcity of food in more northerlylatitudes. They are familiar birds, and resort to our gar-dens and orchards to feed on grass and weed seed. Easilytamed, they make interesting pets. T
