Natural History StoryLinkage to the power of erosion on Earth is this block perched on sand and gravel beside the Kaibab Trail, Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona, USA. The luminous void within this vast chasm meant the removal of prodigious amounts of rock. This was once all layers of bedrock from rim to rim. Over time, the Colorado River has cut its way down to a smooth-flowing gradient a mile below. Water continually erodes the rock into sand and gravel which rolls downhill and swept away. Upon realization that the cliffs are made of hard sandstone and the terraces are made of soft shale, the tapestry known as the Grand Canyon begins to make sense. The loom is made of time and gravity, the threads are rock and water. The chasm's warp and weft are the vertical and horizontal planes, each a simple layer of rock, be it hard or soft, respectively. If you have never been, you should go. The Grand Canyon makes a 'dent' on first-timers. |
