Natua Naach of West Bengal

Summary[edit]

Description
English: Natua Naach is an ancient form of folk dance of Purulia District, and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is believed to be 600 to 700 years old but the mention of this folk dance form is found in Ramayana too. It is a mythological belief that when Lord Shiva along with the procession went to marry Goddess Parvati, the procession wore colorful clothes and covered their body into ashes. It can be seen that the man is wearing colourful cloth and has cover himself in ash dust. Natua Naach is predominantly performed by tribals and other castes. And the families that perform this dance have been performing this dance generation after generation, recently inclusion of people out of community is propagated.
