| Description | Napoli, Museo Archeologico - Il dipinto murale esposto al Museo archeologico di Napoli (inv. 8968), splendido nella resa calligrafica dei volti, rappresenta una scena di banchetto in un salone colonnato, forse un oecus corinthius? Venne rinvenuto nel luglio del 1769 nella Casa VIII 2, 39 (detta anche di Giuseppe II) a Pompei e, in base alla sua prima interpretazione, lo si volle identificare come la raffigurazione dell'episodio del suicidio di Sofonisba che si avvelena alla presenza di Scipione per non essere oggetto del suo trionfo a Roma. A suffragare la suggestiva ipotesi la presenza della figura maschile alle spalle della donna distesa sulla kliné. In essa si volle vedere Massinissa che assiste commosso la sposa prima di sorbire il letale veleno, alla presenza di un pensieroso Scipione, quasi ammirato dal coraggio della donna. Oggi invece molto più prosaicamente si pensa ad una preziosa scena di convivio. |
