Summary[edit]
DescriptionNamibia, Botswana, and South Africa (MODIS 2017-12-04).jpg |
English: The soft oranges, milky-toned tans, ochres, and dark umbers that paint the landscape of southwestern Africa blend like water colors on a rugged canvas when viewed from space. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of the scene on November 28, 2017.
The Republic of Namibia makes out the majority of the image, with Botswana to the east and South Africa to the south. Low cloud (fog) lies over the South Pacific Ocean, with a small amount creeping over the orange sands of the Namib Desert – one of the few sources of water to the extremely arid region. Namibia’s landscape is divided into three general categories. The great Namib Desert stretches along the western coast and is low in elevation and extremely arid. Running north to south through the middle of the country is the Central Plateau, where most of the country’s arable land is found. The Central Plateau gently drops in elevation in the east, and flows into the Kalahari Desert. Just inland from the low, arid coast the long line of broken cliffs and rock outcrops rise sharply. Known as the Great Escarpment, this region separates the coastal deserts from the high-elevation inlands. |
