Title
NCL-407004: Hoop fitting of uncertain date
Description
English: A cast copper-alloy hooped mount of uncertain date, Roman-Post Medieval.

The mount consists of a cast circular hoop with a thickened base and one chamfered edge to the upper/outer face. This chamfered edge has moulded decoration consisting of broader grooves separating panels, each of which consists of two sub-panels each bearing four low ridges and three troughs. In appearance when viewed from the side, this gives the hoop an impression of being crenellated. The inside of the hoop is undecorated.

The only other distinctive feature is a retcangular tab, projecting slight further than the normal width of the hoop, and also bearing a rectangular (cast) hole, slightly askew of the tab. This probably allowed a nail or hook to fit through and attach the hoop to another object.

The function of the hoop is uncertain. The single fitting suggests that the hoop was not the frame for a hanging piece, and it is too thick to be the cladding or framing for a copper-alloy vessel or wooden vessel/bucket. It is possible that the fitting is for a cart/wagon; however, it would be purely decorative rather than functional, as most archaeological examples of metallic cart/wagon fittings tend to be iron.
