Summary[edit]

Description
English: Athabasca oil sands open-cast mining area north of Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada, comparison of satellite images taken in 1984 and 2011, respectively. In 1984 there is only one open-cast mine (Syncrude Base Mine, “Mildred Lake”) present in the area. In 2011 a total of 9 open-cast mines and four in-situ sites were operational or under construction.
Deutsch: Athabasca-Ölsand-Revier, Tagebaue nördlich von Fort McMurray, Alberta, Kanada, Vergleich von Satellitenbildern aus den Jahren 1984 und 2011. Im Jahr 1984 gibt es nur einen einzigen Tagebau am Athabasca River (die Syncrude Base Mine, auch „Mildred Lake“ genannt). Im Jahr 2011 waren insgesamt 9 Tagebaue und vier In-situ-Anlagen in Betrieb oder im Bau.
