Nee, vraag ons niet... Nee, vraag ons niet om taal als een lijst met een strakke rand rond ons vormloos gevoelen, die dat helder maakt met vuurrode letters en als een crocus naakt en alleen staat te pralen op stoffig land. Ach hij die de weg kent waar hij gaat, met anderen en zichzelf op goede voet, en zijn schaduw negeert, die door de zonnegloed op een verveloze muur geschreven staat! Vraag ons niet om de formule die je werelden open kan leggen wel wat krom gemompel, dor als oude schillen. We kunnen je heden slechts dit nog zeggen, dat we niet zijn, dat wat wij niet willen. (vert. K. van Eerd) Dit gedicht werd in 1993 op de muur aangebracht van het huis op de hoek van de Pelikaanstraat en de Oude Rijn in Leiden. Dat was de woning van Karel van Eerd (1938-2008) en Henriette Coppens (1940-2008), makers van de bundel uit 2008 waarin de vertaling van het gedicht van Eugenio Montale is opgenomen, op de muur de originele tekst in het Italiaans.
