CO 2 THROUGH THE LAND OF THE MUSGUMS 131 At two oclock we returned to camp. The festiveboard was spread under tents, and all the Europeanslunched together. The sultans had special tents tothemselves. Several Frenchmen had come over fromFort Lamy, and were gladly welcomed by the Ger-mans, whose hospitality was often cordially recipro-cated on the other side of the river. Thanks to thetact and courtesy of the Governors, the relationsbetween the two stations were of the friendliest. The presentation of gifts was an important itemin the programme of festivities. The sultans sentus three horses with full military equipment, as wellas many other gifts such as saddles, rugs, swords,shields, spears, and all kinds of specimens of nativeindustries, clothing and basket-work. With greatceremony we tended our presents in return in thetown hall. Beautiful silks, European saddles, andthreaded shell bridles were gladly accepted by theseAfrican rulers.
