Description

Lafayette Square, New Orleans. The old stone statue of Benjamin Franklin, by sculptor Hiram Powers.

In 1900 the Henry Clay statue on Canal Street was moved to this location at the center of the square, and this statue moved to the Camp Street side. By 1908 his Franklin statue was moved to the Public Library on Lee Circle and a metal statue of Franklin replaced it in the park. When the Lee Circle Library closed it was mored to Ben Franklin High School in the Carrollton neighborhood; when the school moved out to the Lakefront by UNO the statue went with it where it can still be seen; see Image:BFHS Statue 2006.jpg for a 2006 photograph of the same statue.
