Summary[edit]
DescriptionMountain Bluebird (46666784835).jpg |
NPS/Patrick Myers Mountain bluebirds are the first summer songbirds to appear each year at Great Sand Dunes, arriving in early spring when conditions are often snowy and blustery. Perhaps that's why they have positive symbolic significance in so many cultures throughout the world. For Navajo (Dine') people, the 'Bluebird Song' is a call to wake before dawn and rise to greet the sun. Mountain bluebirds are said to 'wear the sky on their backs', but they are actually not blue! Their greyish-white feathers are designed to refract only the brilliant blue spectrum of light. |
