Summary[edit]

Description

Currently there are six subspecies of Artemisia tridentata (big sagebrush) recognized by the National Plant Data Center. Mountain big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata subsp. vaseyana) is one of the subspecies.

Big sagebrush is perhaps the most important shrub on western rangelands. Evergreen leaves provide an excellent winter food source to numerous species of large mammals, including mule deer, elk, and pronghorn. Small mammals such as mountain and desert cottontails, white-tailed jackrabbits, and sagebrush voles, thrive on big sagebrush, and feed golden eagles, and ferruginous, Swainson's, and red-tailed hawks. Nearly 100 bird species depend on sagebrush ecosystems for their habitat needs. Additionally, there are several animal species having an obligate relationship with big sagebrush, including greater and Gunnison's sage grouse, pygmy rabbits, sage thrashers, sagebrush sparrows and Brewer’s sparrow.
