Summary[edit]
DescriptionMounds of rubble (on site of former walled garden) - geograph.org.uk - 1158049.jpg |
English: Mounds of rubble (on site of former walled garden) More than twenty years ago, a walled garden stood on this site (it had been there for a long time; for example, it is shown on OS maps from the 1860s). It later fell into disrepair, and was eventually demolished, its former site now marked only by these large mounds (which consist mainly of fragments of bricks, of concrete, and of cement paving slabs).
The walled garden was rectangular, measuring 85 metres by 50 metres, with its long axis oriented WSW to ENE (the direction of view of this photo); there was a sundial at its centre. The enclosed area began at the point where the snow cover becomes more dense, about midway between the bottom edge and the centre of the photo, and extended to the near side of the base of the mounds. On a later visit, I took a look at the bricks in the mound. The most common stamp on these bricks appeared to be "BL FERME"; that name was immediately familiar, because I had previously visited the site where the relevant brickworks once stood: https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/956703 Out of shot, but reached by turning left at the snow-covered area in front of the mounds, a short path leads through the woods and to the nearby road that encircles the Vale of Leven Industrial Estate. |
