Everylittle while we passed shooting-lodges, and wesaw several parties beating the moors for pheas-ants with their dogs and drivers, as the seasonhad opened just prior to our visit. Some of thehunting lodges were magnificent affairs, and theywere generally erected on a hillside overlookingthe beautiful valley which we were following. Iwas told that the prices charged for the leasesof these shooting preserves had reached absurdand fabulous figures on account of the demandfor them by millionaire Americans. The Pass ofKilliecrankie through which we passed is wherethe Duke, whom John Drew made famous inAmerica through one of his plays, is supposedto have lived. We had intended to spend the after-noon there visiting the near-by places of interest,but it was raining so hard that we concludedthere was little to do in the way of sightseeingwith comfort, and that we might as well pushon to Inverness. We met at Pitlochry Major Walter Fry, aretired English army officer who was spendingthe summer there in photographing, betweenspells of Scotch mist, the beautiful scenery inthe neighborhood and in fishing in the near-bysalmon streams. He gave me many valuablesuggestions as to what to see farther north inScotland and since our return has sent meseveral photographs of this region, a few ofwhich are reproduced in this volume.
