Cavernous weathering in Jurassic quartzose sandstone in Colorado, USA. Colorado National Monument is a colorful and scenic park just southwest of the town of Grand Junction in western Colorado, USA. It's located in the northeastern part of the Colorado Plateau Physiographic Province, a large section of continental crust that was significant uplifted during the Cenozoic. The rocks in the park are gently folded into a large monocline that has been erosionally dissected into a series of dramatic canyons. Morrison Formation over Wanakah Formation over Entrada Sandstone over Kayenta Formation over Wingate Sandstone (Jurassic; Colorado National Monument, Colorado, USA) The landscape shown above shows a succession of five stratigraphic formations of Jurassic age. The cliff at lower left is the Wingate Sandstone (Lower Jurassic), consisting of eolian sandstones. The mostly-vegetated interval above that is the Kayenta Formation (Lower Jurassic) dominated by fluvial sandstones. The ~salmon-colored cliff in the middle of the photo is the Entrada Sandstone (Middle Jurassic), another eolian sandstone unit. Above that is a marginal marine shale-dominated unit called the Wanakah Formation (Middle Jurassic). The partly vegetated slopes below the ridgetop is the Morrison Formation (Upper Jurassic), a nonmarine succession of fluvial and lacustrine, siliciclastic sedimentary rocks. Locality: Monument Canyon (view from Coke Ovens overlook), Colorado National Monument, southwest of the town of Grand Junction, west-central Mesa County, far-western Colorado, USA |
