January 16, 1879, arrived Jesse N. Smith, president ofthe newly-created Eastern Arizona Stake, appointed onrecommendation of Erastus Snow, After trying to nego-tiate for land at St. Johns, he retm-ned, and he and hiscompany concluded to locate in Snowflake, where they tookup lots not ah-eady appropriated. The farming land wentin a drawing of two parcels each to the city lot owners,who thus became possessed of twenty acres each. JosephFish headed a committee on distribution, which valuedeach city lot at S30, each first-class farming plot of tenacres at $110 and each second-class plot at $60, givingeach shareholder property valued at $200, or ten head ofstock, this being at the rate that Flake paid for the wholeproperty. Flake took only one share. The Mormon towns usually were of the quietest, butoccasionally had excitement brought to them. On one suchoccasion at Snowflake, December 8, 1892, was killed Chas.L. Flake, son of Wm. J. Flake. A message had come fromNew Mexico asking detentio
