Description

Logo à entrada da Exposição Colonial de 1934, centralizando a então denominada Praça do Império, é erigido o monumento “Ao Esforço Colonizador” de Alberto Ponce de Castro e de José de Sousa Caldas (1894-1965). Este monumento foi colocado 50 anos depois (1984) na actual Praça do Império, pelo então Presidente da CMP eng. Paulo Vallada.

Com uma linguagem Art-Déco (compare-se a sua base com o pedestal da Menina Nua na Avenida da Liberdade, seu contemporâneo) é constituído por um conjunto de paralelepípedos de granito encastrados que se eleva a cerca de 10 metros de altura. No topo as armas de Portugal. Na base sustentando esse bloco seis figuras simbolizando o esforço colonizador representando a mulher, o missionário, o militar, o comerciante, o médico e o colono.
