Description

And now, the classic Halloween spook—Monarch Butterflies? Although not normally associated with Halloween in the United States, Monarch Butterflies are an important part of the Day of the Dead celebrations in parts of Mexico. There, they symbolize or herald the return of the spirits of the ancestors.

It’s not just our neighbors to the South that think highly of Monarchs. USGS research showed that Americans place great value on these impressive butterflies, which migrate thousands of miles between the United States and Mexico each year. Read more: on.doi.gov/1q3kAKE

In fact, USGS just partnered with the Monarch Joint Venture to use science to help strengthen monarch conservation in the U.S. Read more: bit.ly/1pLUQlC

Y hoy, el susto clásico del día de las brujas—¿Mariposas Monarcas? Aunque no necesariamente están asociadas con el día de las brujas en los Estados Unidos, las Mariposas Monarcas son una parte importante en el día de los muertos en ciertos lugares de México. Allí, las mariposas simbolizan el regreso de los espíritus de los antepasados.
