Mole salamanders (Ambystoma sp.) have important ecological roles in amphibian communities in Ohio and yet the identity of these large salamanders is unknown in many populations. OBCP funding is being used to develop DNA-based genetic methods to separate between sexual species such as the tiger salamander on the left (A. tigrinum) and the all-female unisexual lineages on the right which likely contains three distinct genomes from tiger, small-mouth (A. texanum) and blue-spotted (A. laterale) species. This information will be used to develop habitat use models for state-listed species such as the blue-spotted salamander.
