Not only so, but the love-sick maidensare unmercifully teased by their fellows ; one sees aknot of girls standing talking, and all of a sudden theybegin to laugh, the loved one excepted, and all run off.It not infrequently happens that a man, in order tosecure his bride as soon as possible, will give himself asa pledge for the bride-money advanced by a wealthyman, and thus practically put himself in the positionof a slave—a great proof of devotion and self-sacrifice.
