Text Appearing Before Image:
d two wholedays, owing to the vigorous opposition of one of thechiefs; but he was at length silenced and the councilcame to a satisfactory conclusion. But now the questionof carriers arose, for Tordays men had bolted. Tworivers had to be crossed, the intervening space havingbeen the battle-field of the belligerents. The Bayanzioffered to come as far as the first river and leave therest to the Bambala. They on their part refused tocross the second river ; so Torday stood a fair chance ofbeing stranded between the two, until Boma, with magni-ficent courage, crossed the no-mans-land and shookhands with the Bayanzi chiefs. And so the peace wasratified. After a stay of six months at Luano, Torday moved onto Kikwit on the same river, the Kwilu, but considerablyfurther south. Kikwit is a European settlement, calledby the natives Matari, after the stone which there formsthe banks of the river. Torday was received with open arms at Kikwit, forhis reputation had preceded him from Luano. Shortly
Text Appearing After Image:
IN THE WILDS OF AFRICA 169 after his arrival disturbances were reported at Baba, onthe River Kwengo, about three days journey to thesouth-west, and so he set out to investigate the cause, which was the usual one. The overbearing behaviourof the European resident had incensed the nativesand his life was in danger. He was told a few unpalat-able truths and packed off to find another sphere ofusefulness, to the great delight of the natives. On thefirst day of their return journey they crossed theYambesi by a vine bridge. This is made by looseningfrom the trees the wild vines, which twine themselvesround their branches; when the ends are broughtsufficiently low, poles, twelve feet or so in length andsix inches thick, are made fast to them, and, if necessary, other vines brought from the forest to make the vinecables equal to any strain likely to be put upon them.To the end of the first pole is lashed a second, which islikewise attached to the branches of the over-hangingtrees on both sides.
