On the larger work it often becomes necessary to secure greatermotive power for ventilating purposes than the heated flue is able tofurnish. For this purpose fans are largely employed, connected as shownin Fig. D. Usually an exhaust fan is used to withdraw the foul air,and another fan to supply fresh air to the fresh-air ducts. No other part of the plumbing system so fully illustrates themany advantages which the open-plumbing system has over theclosed or sheathed-in system. No one attempts to make a comparison of the old-time sheathed-in bath-room work with that of the present day, as far as beauty andartistic effect are concerned. Furthermore, the open system is farmore sanitary. When plumbing fixtures were sheathed in, neither light nor aircould circulate about them, with the result that there was constantlya musty, if not foul, odor present.
