Missouri fires Tomohawk missile

USS Missouri fires a BGM-109 Tomahawk missile. Note the CIWS mounts to the left and right of the bridge.

During the 1980's the United States reactivated, modernized, and recommissioned its Iowa class battleships, partly in keeping with President Ronald Reagan's campaign plank, which called for a "600-ship Navy" and partly because of the Soviet Union's commissioning of the Kirov class battlecruiser. During the modernization the Iowa class battleships received the Amored Box Launcher system, enabling them to fire BGM-109 Tomahawk and AGM-84 Harpoon missiles, as well as the Phalanx Close-in weapon system for protection against enemy missiles. Missouri and her sister ship Wisconsin made use of these missile launchers during Operation Desert Storm, becoming the first ships to fire missiles in the 1991 Gulf War.
